When selecting music for your printed and/or online worship aids, you need to make sure that the music that you select is covered under your license or is in public domain.
- Remember that sometimes the music and the text are copyrighted separately. For instance: In God We Praise You, the music is not copyrighted, but the translation is copyrighted by The Jubilate Group. You would, therefore, need to report the text to One License, who is the reporting agency for Hope Publishing Company, who administers the copyright for The Jubilate Group.
- If you only print the words and the words and/or music is copyrighted, it still needs to be reported, even though you don't print the music. The words are still under copyright.
- There should be a section for copyright notices in your worship aid. The copyright notice can appear under the music (that is how I usually do it at the Cathedral) or it can be listed altogether somewhere else in the worship aid. If you list it altogether, remember to list the name of the music first and then the copyright information.
- Unless you print the words to music you are using in the worship aid, you do not need to report it to the reporting agency. For instance: If you sing The Call (one of the Bishop's favorites), and you don't print anything but the title in the worship aid, you don't have to report it.
The online worship aid and the printed worship aid are essentially going to be reported the same way. If the Mass is livestreamed, then you will have other things to report, which is included in the livestreaming portion of this site.
